Are Additional Certifications Useful in the Workplace? - Jill McDonnell, Success

A certificate program can be a great option for those looking to change careers or deepen their professional knowledge. The certificate alone may not be enough to qualify for employment, depending on your career choice, but it can supplement your skills. “Our company values any type of education and certification a potential or current employee has or maintains,” Saxe says. “With the demand for digital aptitude within the workplace and generally among businesses today, the education from Coursera or Google certificate can only add value to our business.”

Shaping the future of education using stackable credentials - Times Higher Education

Microlearning is an educational approach that has gained momentum in recent years. The concept of stackable credentials could create a paradigm shift in the education sector by challenging the traditional linear model of education. “There’s been quite an explosion in microlearning,” said Graham Bell, director of digital education at Cranfield School of Management. Microlearning programmes offer learners the flexibility and autonomy to study the modules they choose and in the order they prefer. The programme at Cranfield is self-paced and globally available, with minimal entry requirements. This offers learners the opportunity to build their capabilities over time, with the option to progress to a master’s degree.

Report Finds Microcredentials Poorly Understood or Utilized by American Workers But Critical for Professional Development - Kate Lucariello, Campus Technology

Continuous upskilling is not yet the norm: Only 35% of U.S. workers had taken any professional education or training during the year, but 80% were interested in doing so. There is no clear preference for training providers: Twenty percent would prefer certificates from online courses with a non-university provider, while 14% prefer college or university courses. Microcredentials are not widely understood: Higher paid workers ($100,000+) do understand them, but while 38% of others said they were familiar with them, 30% said they could not identify what they are.

Alternative and micro-credentials are the future of workforce education, says expert HRCP - Hilary Tetenbaum, USA Today

Such a high number of job vacancies provides opportunities for people who want to pivot their career, either in the same or a different industry. Many of these people have been in their current career for several years, or even decades, but would want to shift to a different role. Rather than going back to college and studying to get a new degree, which is expensive and time-consuming, many people who would like to upgrade their careers are turning to micro-credentials, which are rapidly gaining popularity among jobseekers and acceptance among employers.

How I Earned (Hacked) a Google Career Certificate - Anne Kim, Washington Monthly

After writing for years about the benefits of certificates and short-term credential programs, especially for working learners, I had begun to feel inauthentic, like a self-help guru who doesn’t take her own advice. So I finally enrolled in one this spring: Google’s “career certificate” program in data analytics, available online through Coursera for $39 a month.  According to the American Council on Education, which evaluates academic programs, my Google data analytics certificate program should have taken 175 hours and more than six months to complete. My shortcuts got me mine in about two and a half weeks. I still believe that quality certificate programs can help jump-start, restart, or advance careers. But they’re neither a stand-alone solution nor a silver bullet.

Promising, Then Revoking, ‘Forever’ Alumni Status for Certificate Grads - Kathryn Palmer, Inside Higher Ed

University of Southern California tentatively settles false advertising lawsuit by graduates of certificate programs, raising issues of how colleges value different students. Who gets to claim alumni status at the University of Southern California and benefit from its powerful network? For years, Brian Ralston, who earned a graduate certificate in music scoring for motion pictures and television from USC in 2002, thought he did. They learned the university had updated its bylaws sometime in the 2010s—without notifying affected graduates—to no longer grant alumni status to graduate certificate holders who don’t otherwise have a traditional bachelor’s or graduate degree from USC.

Leveraging Alternative Credentials To Expand The Talent Pool -Michael Timmes, Forbes

While employers have developed some creative strategies to expand the talent pool to attract and retain more workers—such as reaching out to former employees, scaling back hours to help retain Baby Boomers, practicing salary transparency in recruiting efforts and improving the employee value proposition—there is one approach that has received little publicity: targeting people who are "skilled through alternative routes," or STARs. STARs are adults without four-year bachelor’s degrees who have work experience and skills that translate to higher-paying jobs. According to Opportunity@Work data, 50% of all U.S. workers fall into this category and "are well-positioned to fill middle and high-wage jobs across all sectors including in-demand" and emerging roles, such as software developers, customer service representatives, patient care coordinators and cybersecurity analysts.
