There's a massive skills gap among workforces where traditional assessments have been poor to match talent to jobs. An abundance of credentializing and discriminatory recruitment practices create further barriers to good talent acquisition. Modern assessment methods like competency-based assessments match recruitment to skills rather than credentials. There are 6.5 million unemployed people in the United States, yet nearly 11 million job openings point to the massive skills gap among current workforces. Meanwhile, the Great Resignation is in full swing, fuelled by toxic work environments and unaddressed grief from two years of pandemic life.

Education is yours for life - Joe Graves, Mitchell Republic
In a process that some call micro-credentialing and others call competency-based recognition or even just demonstrations of mastery, industries in the West are turning away from an emphasis on degrees and toward one of specific skills attainment. According to industry experts, corporations including Apple, Costco, and Amazon, are going right to the heart of the matter by identifying precisely what employees need to know in order to enhance their performance or earn a promotion and then offering it. Rather than recommending a degree in the computer sciences, industrial engineering, or business management, these companies target specific skills and ask that their employees take the necessary training to master them.

Governments need to be mindful of how microcredentials are developed and the role they play in education and training across Canada. Microcredentials are a new way to mobilize workers to acquire and validate skills that meet a labour market need through flexible, short and timely training. In recent years, a number of provinces have made significant investments in the growth of microcredentials (at least $75 million since 2020), and recommendations to further expand microcredentials have come from business groups like the Business Council of Alberta and the Future Skills Council.

Three steps to developing useful microcredentials - Natcha Thawesaengskulthai, THE Campus
Alternative credentials have become increasingly popular in the higher education sphere, especially in the wake of the global pandemic. While a set definition has yet to be agreed upon, microcredentials can be understood as mini-credits, narrower in range and scope than traditional qualifications. Microcredentials are particularly beneficial when linked to fast-changing industry skills requirements. A microcredential does not award a degree but rather a “credential,” or a type of badge. Coursework is mandatory, and this determines the success of the learner. This makes microcredentials versatile and useful for all types of students, from prior degree holders to market veterans.

Google Career Certificates: Heralding the Future - Ray Schroeder, Inside Higher Ed
Postsecondary education is broken. The signs are obvious and pervasive. Although not perfect and not a universal solution, Google has launched an alternative approach that illuminates the way to address many of the shortcomings that plague our current system. While the problems with education beyond high school are deep and many, three towering issues loom over the rest. They are staggering student debt, non-completion rates nearing 40%, and graduating students who are ill-prepared for the workforce. Combined, they make continuing our current model untenable for the future. The real game changer, to my mind, is Google’s partner program with employers.
