McKee proposes a new program to help adults earn higher education credentials, here's how - Linda Borg, The Providence Journal

Rhode Island has a college attainment problem: only 53% of adults have some higher-education experience. In Central Falls, just over one-third of residents have a high-school diploma, and only 13% have an associate’s degree or higher. Gov. Dan McKee is pushing for a program to give adults a boost toward enrolling in college, completing college or earning technical training. McKee said, “We must meet Rhode Islanders where they are and help give them the personalized, hands-on help they need to earn their credentials from our colleges and universities. The academy will help our state get more people back into the workforce in jobs that will not only earn them living wages but put them at the ground floor of careers.”

How AI and Associated Technologies Change the Role of Higher Ed - Ray Schroeder, Inside Higher Ed

As artificial intelligence and associated technologies extend their influence in our society, the role of higher education must change. We can no longer prepare learners for static careers in unchanging fields.  We are all familiar with the robotic revolution of prior decades in which assembly-line work positions were lost to robotic assembly lines. That shakeout took a toll on a skilled but less educated population. Human skills were no longer needed because “intelligent” robots could do the job faster, more consistently and at a lower cost to the business. Now, Brookings warns us that the most vulnerable jobs of the future are in better paid and better educated fields: “Our analysis shows that workers with graduate or professional degrees will be almost four times as exposed to AI as workers with just a high school degree. Holders of bachelor’s degrees will be the most exposed by education level, more than five times as exposed to AI than workers with just a high school degree.”

Collaboration Is Key to Successful Alternative Credential Creation - Ray Schroeder, Inside Higher Ed

A tsunami of alternative credentials is emerging to meet the shifting learning needs of those in the workforce. Higher education is looking beyond the dwindling market of 18-year-olds to lifelong, professional and continuing ed to sustain enrollments.  While it may seem relatively easy to throw together a few classes that have identifiable market-driven skills and abilities as learning outcomes, in practice creating a successful certificate program involves much more, The most important link in the process is to reach out to business, government agencies, nongovernmental organizations and industry leaders to create a long-term, continuing, working collaboration on identifying the needed skills, knowledge and abilities.

Several Options for Earning Pesticide Certification - Philip Kaatz, Michigan State University Extension

In Michigan, winter is a time when the commercial agricultural community starts to think about pesticide applicator certifications. For some, it may be because the new production season is approaching and they would like to make sure everything is in place before it begins. For others, it's because applicator certification credentials must be obtained before purchasing restricted use pesticides. In service to Michigan agriculture, Michigan State University Extension has developed this short FAQ to help restricted use pesticide (RUP) applicators find the testing and recertification options that work best for them.

The 18 most popular online professional certification programs on Coursera, led by companies like Google and Facebook - Mara Leighton, Business Insider

One of the most enduring appeals of taking an online class is the simple, affordable gateway it can provide to a new, better-paying, and stabler career. An additional perk of finishing an online course or program is gaining a professional certificate: A recognition you can add to your LinkedIn profile, resume, or CV to show future employers your proficiency and initiative. Unlike master's degrees or bootcamps, online professional certificates are usually shorter-term, more flexible, and a fraction of the cost of traditional continuing education. Entry-level certificates also don't usually require prior knowledge or degrees to sign up for.

Micro-credentials, the way forward to upskill employees - New Straits Times

Globalisation and rapid global digital developments, which have compelled industries to change, also need employees to similarly evolve so that they are not left behind. Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Institute of Continuing Education and Professional Studies (iCEPS) chief executive Prof Dr Azizul Halim Yahya said those with skills and competence will be the top choice of employers. "In this case, working experience and a lack of certain skills often hamper individuals including graduates in their quest for employment," he said. This is where micro-credentials play a role in giving added value to candidates to become the choice of employers or remain relevant in their careers," he said.

Are microcredentials the future of higher ed? - Moira MacDonald, University Affairs

The term “microcredential” has been on the lips of a growing number of Canadian postsecondary administrators and faculty over the last four years, reflecting a global trend. But the pandemic has been an accelerant, with microcredentials showing up in the COVID-19 recovery playbooks of governments anxious to address massive job losses on one hand, and frustrated employers complaining of skills and labour shortages on the other. While definitions vary, as do the names (digital badges, micro courses, nanoprograms and the like are all related labels) the basic idea is that these are short courses that cultivate and verify a particular skill, knowledge or competency that employers want, and help learners bridge their pre-existing skills and knowledge to meet rapidly changing labour market demands without removing them from the workforce.
